1. Saying numbers |
1) Usage
Quantifiers(numbers with counter suffixes) are usually put before the verbs they modify. However, this is not always the case with length of time.
① | りんごを よっつ かいました。 | I bought four apples. |
② | りゅうがくせいが ふたり います。 | There are two foreign students. |
③ | くにで にかげつ にほんごを べんきょうしました。 |
I studied Japanese for two months in my country. |
2) Interrogatives
a) いくつ is used to ask how many about things which are counted as ひとつ, ふたつ, …….
④ | みかんを いくつ かいましたか。 | How many mandarin oranges did you buy? |
…やっつ かいました。 | …I bought eight. |
b) なん is used with a counter suffix to ask how many.
⑤ | このだいがくに りゅうがくせいが なんにん いますか。 How many foreign students are there at this university? |

⑥ | まいばん なんじかん にほんごを べんきょうしますか。 How many hours do you study Japanese every night? |

c) どのくらい is used to ask the length of time something takes or has taken. You can use various units of time in the answer.

⑧ | きょうとから とうきょうまで どのくらい かかりますか。 How long does it take from Kyoto to Tokyo? |

3) ぐらい
ぐらい is added after quantifiers to mean“about.”
⑨ | がっこうに せんせいが さんじゅうにんぐらい います。 There are about thirty teachers in the school. |
⑩ | 15ふんぐらい かかります。 It takes about fifteen minutes. |
