Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (the present Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), the KYOTO Stock Center was founded in 1999 to further our understanding of how life works and to become one of the world’s leading centers for life science. It was the parent body of the Drosophila Genetic Resource Center (DGRC) at Kyoto Institute of Technology. DGRC is now part of Advanced Insect Research Promotion Center created by KIT on July 1, 2015. The Center for Advanced Insect Research Promotion also houses the Department of Bioresource Field Science and the Department of Insect Biomedical Research Center. The DGRC has been renamed the Department of Drosophila Genomics and Genetic Resources (DGGR).
This reorganization is solely structural. Our department continues to serve the dual purposes of collecting, maintaining, and distributing Drosophila stocks world-wide, and of conducting cutting edge research, to understand and discover new principles of biological function and evolution that will lead to a better understanding of animal and human health.
